I wanted a reference for reasonable velocities near the equator (this comes from the noaa surface drifter program). I can easily extend estimates closer to the equator, but was being conservative because velocities start to get large and without this reference I wasn't sure to what extent these are real.
After revisiting the geostrophic velocity calculation and comparing to 5 years of gridded AVISO, I am more confident in my estimates. Comparison with the above figure also shows relatively good geographic pattern agreement. Seems like along-track estimates can be a few times more energetic than the gridded equivalent.
how close to the equator is reasonable?
