Why

• Matrix supports additional features (reactions, quoting, presence, custom emoji) that IRC does not support. As such, people on non-IRC chat clients can use these features and have proper federation.
• The OCF no longer has to maintain slackbridge.
• We have a more accessible free-software chat service to recommend to people.

Potential Problems

• It's unclear how to use these bridges in reverse (i.e. bridge a matrix native room into slack/discord/irc instead of the other way around)

I'd recommend keeping XMPP next to IRC, the Biboumi configuration works well and hasn't needed changing since it was introduced.
