Level-specific quirks and features #82

I'd like to see some variation and surprizes in how some levels can be played !

Here are some suggestions for level-specific things that would give some much needed change and challenge, and open potential new horizons:

  1. Varied waves: few strong attackers followed by a lot of weak ones, slow attackers followed by fast attackers
  2. Chips that switch slots randomly or at predefined moments or intervals
  3. Alternate lanes that move or can be switched on and off either manually, randomly or at predefined intervals or moments
  4. "Firewall" or "Barricade" that needs attackers hit it to unlock the lane behind
  5. Chip types unavailable in some levels (like in early levels, but independent of chips unlocked)
  6. Attackers immune to some chip types (like the cryptocoin)

Some of the challenge is how to communicate to the player that now their beloved "shift" chip can’t be used? I like a lot the firewall / barricade, it could be a really expensive chip that "swallow" a certain number of attacker and then is destroyed giving access to the lane. This would be balanced by the fact that you can’t upgrade it and you cannot sell it so after like 4 "attacker" are in it is destroyed.

Maybe the electronic analog to this is a capacitor that can retain a certain charge but will blow up / explode if above certain threshold.

One interesting side effect, what if this destroy the node slot? Thus you loose permanently a slot if you do it

Communicating this information could be done through the "mission briefing" screen before each level, on which the game sometimes gives you tips and tricks, and information regarding new unlocked chips. Said chip would be unavailable to use in that level as well, thus if the player skipped the previous dialogue, they would quickly realize what they cannot do in that level.

Good ideas regarding the firewall/capacitator ! these will have to be tested in game i believe, to see if their effectiveness, price and potential cons are balamced together. What about heat management ? the capacitor would retain EVERY attacker coming through, but would very quickly heat up, requiring the player to sell it before it's too late. This mechanic would certainly lead players to favours capacitators over MEM chips for quick bursts of ennemies, or at the end of a level when previously placed down chips are rendered ineffective.
