first groupbuy for ochin board - declaration of interest #2

Closed pernicious-flier closed 1 year ago

pernicious-flier commented 3 years ago

To start the production of the first batch of the ochin board is important to set the number of the boards to produce, in order to keep the price low. Please comment let me know if you're interested to buy one or more ochin boards. The price will be known when we reach a sufficient number of interest declaration. THIS IS WITHOUT ANY OBBLIGATION for anybody. Please consider the chip shortage too, the production date depends also on the availability of materials. But i think we will do it!

4O6FPV commented 2 years ago

I would be down for 2 board as well, great little project and very sorry to hear about all the shortages! glad you have redesigned such a great project.

praveen-khm commented 2 years ago

If well priced, I would pickup 4 units.

hseduster commented 2 years ago

I know it would vary a lot, but is there any chance we could get a rough price? I mean something as vague as "under $100" or "between 100 and 300" would be fine by me. Even at something like 200, I would want at least 2-4 boards. I'd love to commit to more (much more...) but I don't wanna take out a second mortgage...

Just a thought anyway. Either way, I want to see this thing on my desk like yesterday!

Hey thanks hseduster! it will be under 100$ (CM4 module excluded), unfortunately i won't know the exact price until the day i start the production.

4O6FPV commented 2 years ago

Oh in that case I will take 4 modules!!

Just wondering... which variety of the CM4 Module (with EMMc memory, with MictoSD card, with or without WiFi, with 2,4,8 GB RSM is presumably the best bet? Thanks!

Just wondering... which variety of the CM4 Module (with EMMc memory, with MictoSD card, with or without WiFi, with 2,4,8 GB RSM is presumably the best bet? Thanks!

Hello Careyer, EMMc is mandatory, ochin board doesn't have the sdcard header. The reasons why are: save space for other connectors (i wanted to keep the same size of the cm4), emmc is much faster and durable, the interface is used for emmc OR sdcard (cm4 with EMMc doesn't work with sdcard). If you want to use OpenHD 16GB are enought (maybe 8GB but not sure). I'm also developing a sw, totally different in goal and type from OpenHD and it may need more space, i'll tell you more very soon. About the RAM, OpenHD guys say that 1GB is enought, with other sw you may need more, depends on what you want to do, for example for computer vision, machine learning etc, more is better. In my opinion 16GB EMMc 2GB RAM is a good option, but if you want to develop sw you better go to 32GB.

pernicious-flier commented 2 years ago

The new prototypes will arrive very soon, and I will do the following tests right away, I will let you know the results asap.

If you would like me to do a specific tests, please let me know, if possible I will be happy to do so.

@pernicious-flier pernicious-flier mentioned this issue 5 minutes ago The wifi module for OpenHD is not needed, but can be easily disabled. I find i t useful as i use the wifi as ap in order to access a local web server for develop sw and configure the CM4. On the first version of the ochin board the wifi module interfere with the CSI camera 1 since they were very close. I solved the problem shielding the CSI flat cable. In the new version the CM4 module is rotated by 180ยฐ and it doesn't intefere anymore. In any case the wifi module couldn't be used during the flight and in my opinion is better to turn it off after the fc is armed.

Great project! We are looking to move from 3A+ to a 4 CM and your board would be perfect. We have a need to add ethernet - does/could your carrier board support onboard ethernet? If all works out probably looking at needing several dozen. Thanks!

careyer commented 2 years ago

Thanks for your very informative answer! I ordered a CM4 with WiFi then. Now waiting for the Ochin :-)

hello vigilant E66, unfortunately the ochin card does not have the necessary connections for the ethernet, it would be possible to add it in a future version but we should remove other interfaces because there is no space for other connectors, moreover the ethernet requires filters that generally they are bulky. A solution that you could adopt, is to use a usb-ethernet interface and connect it to one of the 4 usb ports. In case you decide to use the ochin board, i suggest to test the solution on a RPI4 first(if don't have a cm4 + IOboard)

Thank you for the quick response - our plan B was to try the USB port solution. Thanks and looking forward to kicking the tires!

Hello guys, i have good news, now we have the components for the first batch! Stay tuned on the Curry Kitten channel, he will make a test of the board very soon. I've already tested the board on workbench for hours and hours, and i did several long range flight and worked flawlessly. I'm also working to publish here all the test that i did on the board. We're almost there!

sarnold04 commented 2 years ago

I would also be interested in one or two boards.

so this is where i can finally buy the item or how will that work? or does someone collect the money and then issues a production job? ...i dont really get that ;)

pernicious-flier commented 2 years ago

The ochin boards will be produced and sold by Seeedstudio. When the production is ready you will find them in their marketplace (of course I will notify you), you will have to buy them like any other object in the marketplace. Given the enormous problems in finding the material, the components for the first 150 boards were purchased as soon as they were available, therefore it is no longer necessary to organize the groupbuy. I decided to do so because with groupbuy, the purchase of material would have taken place at the end of the campaign, without any guarantee that it would still be available from distributors (again due to shortage). This is also good news, there is no need to reach any threshold, the components are already there. A little more patience and they will be ready !!

Hey David๐Ÿ‘‹ it's too big for the pcb.. i think it's better to mount it on cable or directly from the flight controller if it's mounted on top

Are the board being delivered with a pigtail already soldered on?

You mean the power cables? Nope, has two pads like the ones you find on the flight controller. The pads are one each layer connected with several vias, are strong once soldered.

sensei-hacker commented 2 years ago

FYI it's a 2 amp board. That means a quality Dupont plug ("servo connector") would be an appropriate power connector.

An XT60 would be killing a fly with a bazooka.

davidbitton commented 2 years ago

@MorrisR2 I was just going off the wire gauge used in the product pictures.

Hi Guys, we finally did it !! Immagine 2022-08-26 101730

The boards were all tested one by one to verify the operation of the CSI camera, USB ports, UARTS etc. On a sample basis, some boards were also tested with OpenHD. The boards will be distributed by Seeedstudio through their channels (seeedstudio Marketplace, Mouser, DigiKey and more). We kept the price as low as possible, I said between 60$ and 70$ and it's set at 59.90$ including shipping. Yahoooo!
