Did you report the problem with ttfautohint to Werner Lemberg?
What I was referring to has long been reported to Peter S. Baker as the author of Junicode. He writes in the thread I linked that the original problem with ttfautohint
has been fixed. I'm going to need to recompile Junicode with a later version of that utility.
Peter hasn't released a fixed version in over 3 years, however.
@carbeck I don't see those unicode characters in the latest version here; did they exist in a previous version?
BTW its possible to de-hint a file with ttfautohint and then reapply it, so I think you could fix this yourself :)
Yes, Junicode 0.900 has a few metric abbreviations between U+23D1 and U+23D4, and there's a number of precomposed characters in the PUA between U+F704 and U+F71C.
Regarding de-hinting, I wasn't aware of this. However, said version 0.900 has been released shortly after I made my last comment.
Junicode has various precomposed symbols for giving poetic meters in U+F704 to U+F71C which are triggered e.g. when putting a combining acute on top of a multiplication sign to indicate a stressed syllable. However, the last available version of Junicode has a bug when printing, apparently due to the ttfautohint version it was compiled against being faulty as well. EB Garamond looks like an adequate replacement for it.
