Cleaner json handling #393

Note: this PR is the same as #391, I just renamed the original branch. This PR is the fifth and last one in the series of committing/cleaning what was on the prod server. The change to exception handling in json parsing should make it way easier to debug, and eventually resolve #265 & #385.
