Accounting for Shot Blocking? #1

I don't watch enough hockey to know how often it happens currently, but was wondering whether it could be relevant information when assessing goalie performance.

I did some quick reading about hockey stats after your presentation to SF Python group this evening- it's really neat! Anyways, I was reminded of a blog post that went up on YHat a few months ago - perhaps their work could help inform whether it's something useful to consider (particularly in the context of picking a goalie for a fantasy pool).

Hey Cameron. Really nice meeting you on Wednesday, thanks for coming out.

That's a cool blog post, I've seen that website before but not that post. Maybe I'll start using selenium for some of my data pulls. He does have one mistake, which is not accounting for playoff games being longer on average (unlimited overtime). But I expect that his results are still true.

Most goalie stats ignore blocks, because they're not officially counted as shots. I bet the presence of good shot blockers changes the composition of shots faced, but hopefully most of that is caught by shot difficulty metrics.

Shot blocking is a really debatable topic in skater evaluation. Two of the common metrics, corsi and Fenwick, differ only in whether they include blocks or not. But I'm not sure if anyone has really thought in detail about the goalie angle, so that could be something fun to look into.

Cheers, Richard
