Although a DOI can be produced using figshare and zenodo and other options, github seems to recommend zendo. Github and zenodo play nicely together. A DOI tag appears if the link is copied to the README file and a new DOI is automatically produced for every new release.
I plan to try zenodo soon. I will focus on the practical aspect of actually making it work.
