External Wireless adapter not recognized #577

Closed jslon closed 5 years ago

jslon commented 8 years ago

Device:

Oneplus 2

OS version (KitKat/Lollipop/Marshmallow/Nougat):

Marshmellow

Built from repo (date and build command) or downloaded from website (links):

kernel-nethunter-oneplus2oos-marshmallow-20160915-155247

Output of cat /proc/version in adb shell or NetHunter Terminal:

Linux version 3.10.84-perf+ (root@nhbuild-box) (gcc version 4.9.x-google 20140827 (prerelease) (GCC)) #14 SMP PREEMPT Thu Sep 15 05:53:52 CDT 2016

Issue:

I'm trying to connect an external wireless adapter, TP-Link TL-WN722N to my Oneplus Two, I have tried with two different USB-C -> USB adapters, an AUKEY one and the other one from Apple, both brand new. My TP-Link wireless adapter works fine on my computer. But I'm not able to get it recognized by my phone.

I'm using the last image @binkybear gave me: https://transfer.sh/ewYh5/kernel-nethunter-oneplus2oos-marshmallow-20160915-155247.zip.

After running ifconfig -a there is no wlan1 and ifconfing wlan1 up gave me error.

After running dmesg | grep wlan1 && dmesg | grep ath there is no output.

Here is an screenshot from the output of dmesg | grep usb: screenshot

binkybear commented 8 years ago

I'll take another look at this (and camera issue) but in my experience a USBC > OTG didn't work for OnePlus2. It only worked with regular OTG cable and USB-C adapter.

Not sure why but just my experience.

ozsteyr commented 8 years ago

Correct, standard OTG cable with correct type C adapter. From what I found there are a lot of micro to type C adapters that work.

webcoderz commented 8 years ago

I'm having same issue what about. Using usb_modeswitch in terminal?

webcoderz commented 8 years ago

I got the phone to recognize when I went to hotspot options in the phone and setup hotspot and The usb tethering is off by default

webcoderz commented 8 years ago

not in terminal though.

webcoderz commented 8 years ago

Weird i reset it a couple if times bit It is appearing as rndis0 in terminal now.

webcoderz commented 8 years ago

here's the dmesg grep rndis0 https://goo.gl/photos/BsAf6o6XsW4SAnzXA Yet I can't putinto monitoring mode

jslon commented 8 years ago

In my case i'm not geting any output on the dmesg |grep rndis0 :/

webcoderz commented 8 years ago

The weird thing is when I put the router in monitor mode I get this error

https://goo.gl/photos/cQaZKVDEUYUJrbad8

Weird thing is I use my tp link as a pineapple when I insert usb so I know it has monitoring mode its a tp link mr3040

webcoderz commented 8 years ago

The grep of the usb also picked up the proper ath6kl_usb and the ath9k drivers and the rndis_wlan driver

webcoderz commented 8 years ago

I should've posted my issue in the nexus 5 issue # but did it here because it seems to be a general issue and not phone related I meant to post there but seemed an easier method to consolidate both on this issue and that issue is over 3 years old. once a solution is found , unless i forget, ill post the solution in that issue # so we can close 2 at once!

MelrondMcBong commented 8 years ago

Same here!

Device: Nexus 7 2013 LTE OS: Marschmellow 6.0.1 MOB30X

i tried nightly release from idlekernel and i tried to build it myself with the same results. All versions above the 3.0 release version does not work for me.

https://goo.gl/photos/cQaZKVDEUYUJrbad8

Edit: I think there is an issue with the kernel, after i restored only the bootpartition with the kernel that comes along with the 3.0 release it works for me

binkybear commented 8 years ago

@MelrondMcBong - Please open a new issue for Nexus 7 2013 and what specifically isn't working. It gets confusing trying to track issues with certain devices when they show up in other device issues.

jslon commented 8 years ago

So do you think my phone isn't detecting my wireless card because a hardware problem? Using the phone's cable and a usb female/female adapter should make it work?

binkybear commented 8 years ago

I feel pretty confident I enabled atheros and other wireless devices. If you have a different adapter I would try that first. Otherwise I can resend another kernel.

jslon commented 8 years ago

Ok, I have tried with a TP-Link WN823N that also works fine on my computer and it didn't work on the phone, ifconfig -a doesn't show anything, iw dev neither. Here is the output at the end of dmesg: screenshot 20_09_2016 11_38_48 da tarde What else do you recommend me to troubleshoot this problem?

binkybear commented 8 years ago

I rebuilt kernel just in case and double checked configuration. Untested on my side:

https://transfer.sh/11MpwM/kernel-nethunter-oneplus2oos-marshmallow-20160921-063244.zip

jslon commented 8 years ago

Thank you, but I just flashed it and still not working :/

jslon commented 8 years ago

Sorry for still bothering but I really need to get this work. I've have tried with 3 different USB-C -> USB adapters, I recently bought an USB female/female adapter and tried with the phone's cable and it still not detecting anything, lsusb have no response, dmesg don't show anything about ath, ath9k, wlan1 or rndis0. Don't know what else I could try to make this work.

cyrus104 commented 8 years ago

I'm having this same issue. I have used the official USB-C adapter from OnePlus to a known working USB micro OTG adapter. I have also tried several other USB-C adapters that I know are working for a N5x with nethunter (there are other problems but the adapter is working).

binkybear commented 8 years ago

@jslon - Your device is a TP-Link WN823N, which according to https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_TL-WN823N_v1, uses a rtl8192cu driver.

In my configuration file I have enabled it: https://github.com/binkybear/android_kernel_oneplus_msm8994/blob/origin/boeffla_oos3/arch/arm64/configs/kali_defconfig#L1563

The file should be located in /system/etc/firmware/rtlwifi: https://github.com/offensive-security/kali-nethunter/blob/master/nethunter-installer/boot-patcher/system/etc/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin

A couple things could be happening. Either that firmware isn't loading or it's a power issue. Have you tried other external wifi devices?

@cyrus104 - Is this the OP2 also? What wifi device are you using?

cyrus104 commented 8 years ago

Binkybear, thanks for getting back to me.

I've worked on several devices: OP2 w/ TP-Link tl-wn722n OP2 w/ Alfa AWUS036NHA OP2 w/ StarTech USB300WN2X2D

Thanks for looking into this.

binkybear commented 8 years ago

Can either of you email me a dmesg when you plugin in the device and try to call it up?

dmesg > /sdcard/dmesg.txt

binkybear@nethunter.com

Also, are you using OxygenOS or CM13?

Hey @binkybear thank you for looking into this. Actually I'm using a TP-Link TL-WN722N, which according to this it uses a Atheros AR9271 driver. I don't see it at the configuration file. Besides I also tried with the TP-Link TL-WN823N and it didn't work. I just emailed you the result of dmesg with both adapters. Thank you.

binkybear commented 8 years ago

The dmesg results didn't have anything related to devices. I have tested on a OnePlus2 and can confirm that wlan1 is not working.

My assumption for now is that it's related to wlan.ko in the same way that OnePlus3 is also having issue after adding wlan module.

cyrus104 commented 8 years ago

@binkybear My dmesg has the following in it, are these not related? It's weird that I can run dmesg 5 times in a row with no change and then plug in the USB-C adapter and WLAN card and about 50-60 lines pop up in dmesg. No idea what they are thought.

[1266874889.709551] [20161004_11:27:44.783100]@0 wlan: [6533:E :WDA] scan_id a020, vdev_id 0, scan type 0, msg_type 1103 [1266874889.709551] [20161004_11:27:45.022306]@3 wlan: [11431:E :WDA] scan complete - scan_id a020, vdev_id 0 [1266874889.709551] [20161004_11:27:45.022540]@3 wlan: [6533:E :SME] Found 4 BSS, statusCode 0 [1266874889.709551] [20161004_11:27:45.023267]@3 wlan: [6533:E :SME]

binkybear commented 8 years ago

No thats just your regular wlan, it's not related to external. The external is not showing up at all. Also I will double check OTG.

Okay, this is silly. Go to settings > storage and usb > enable OTG

cyrus104 commented 8 years ago

Oh, I haven't been following the OP3 issue, what is it and how long do you think it will take for a fix to come out?

Thanks

binkybear commented 8 years ago

@cyrus104 - Got wlan1 working by enabling OTG in settings.

cyrus104 commented 8 years ago

@binkybear - Where is this amazing setting, I thought I have been through every menu in the OP2 w/ CM13.

binkybear commented 8 years ago

Go to settings > storage and usb > enable OTG (top right)

cyrus104 commented 8 years ago

Hmm, all I have is the search button. I do not have a : or menu button.

binkybear commented 8 years ago

The kernel is for Oxygen OS. I'm unsure about CM 13.

cyrus104 commented 8 years ago

Ah, I was trying to follow the Nethunter installer using CM13 to build it.

binkybear commented 8 years ago

I'll remove OTG switch from kernel and upload a new one so it will be on by default.

cyrus104 commented 8 years ago

awesome, will I just need to do a git update for the -d oneplus2cm and then just -k so I only get the new kernel?

binkybear commented 8 years ago

The oneplus2cm should already have otg switch enabled. It's the OxygenOS that shouldn't. I'll have to upload a oneplus2 cm kernel tomorrow and build tonight.

cyrus104 commented 8 years ago

Hmm, is there something else on the oneplus2cm that could be causing problems since it's supposed to be enabled by default?

cyrus104 commented 8 years ago

I am not sure what I did differently but I built NH for oneplus2cm and then reflashed CM and the NH to start fresh and now the oneplus USB-C OTG adapter shows me devices.

This is now working but only with the oneplus adapter, would like to know what they do differently so I can make my own cables.

ghost commented 8 years ago

@binkybear i have installed nethunter 3.0 on oneplus one. Android 6.0.1 cyanogen 13.0-znh0eas2jk and kernel is 3.4.11 Its not detecting external usb(TL-WN722N).

ghost commented 8 years ago

And also suggest the best working combination of stock rom or aosp and twrp, super su versions for oneplus one nethunter 3.0.

leadot1 commented 8 years ago

@bingkybear well l be able to install kali nethunter in galaxy s4 i9500

genericcx commented 7 years ago

is there any existing kernel or workaround for this already? I do not seem to be able to get this working with any of the suggestions above (otg switch, otg adapter etc). Not sure if related but i see this in dmesg

[1266874889.709551] [20170826_15:58:50.180387]@1 synaptics,s3320: all finger up

current version

root@kali:/# cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.10.84-perf+ (root@nh-buildbox) (gcc version 4.9.x-google 20140827 (prerelease) (GCC) ) #3 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 5 02:47:29 UTC 2016
root@kali:/#

using OOS 3.6.0 and built with -d oneplus2oos -m -f -nb -ni --rootfs minimal

thanks!
