need concept of 'viewing people', whether people show up in news feed, you search by name, news feed shows them near spots you go to etc.

As such would need 'requests', 'awaiting approval', etc. What's a barebones approach?

No approval necessary. Go the twitter approach. Rather than 'friend' - add 'followers'

good point, like the twitter approach. then support twitter'esque 'direct message' or just 'mention' in a posting..that would show up in their/other followers news feed. In addition show in a 'geolocationed news feed'. Seems fancy and like something we should build separate but integrated as other services might want to use it (license, etc)
