Product vs Service

So, I was thinking about resultly and what it could be vs should be, etc. What occurred to me is that our audience (smaller clubs) might be more benefitted by a wordpress-style approach - that is to say open source software anybody can implement & customize, with the business side coming from making custom implementations of the software or using that software to build a hosted approach (basically what automattic has done with wordpress.org vs wordpress.com).

The bonuses to this approach would be:

• open source project - we can get contributors to help w/ code
• no real requirement for immediate moneymaking schemes (IE business model)
• affordable implementation for most clubs
• agency-style approach for larger clubs w/ money to spend

Cons being:

• open source project - can be replicated w/o our consent
• no real capital to start with - probably wouldn't replace day jobs for a while

This is actually a great idea. I love it. This also allows me to really crank out a bunch of templates as well, just a bonus. This could also act as a great portfolio of work on top of an already amazingly awesome project. Perhaps, thinking further down the road we can add in basic website templates as well to go along with results, but maybe I am going to far :)
