English example textile #44

The only example I have at the moment is “Estante cocinero”, which is in Spanish and not very useful since I’ll be pursuing the English site first. Therefore, a priority in addition to finishing site development is getting a working English example to add to the initial database.

As resources for publicly available literature sources for creating early textiles:

Gutenberg: public domain collection of free ebooks, mainly consisting of older literature whose copyrights have expired.

ELO Electronic Literature Collection: The Electronic Literature Organization, though not a great source of material for my project, seems like a great place to share my site.

I finished the example tile, and gave it the title, “The Ugly”. However, much to my disappointment, it’s performing very poorly on the site. The scaling is very off (it appears very zoomed in for some reason, I think maybe because it got exported with some transforms that weren’t applied to the paths) and the interaction and rendering is extremely slow. Apparently the file size and complexity of this new textile is much greater than the last I was using, although the source drawing is about the same size. I will try to figure out why this new puzzle is behaving so much worse than “Estante Cocinero”.

Alright, thankfully the performance loss was a false alarm; since the scale was much larger for this image the rasterized text paths created much more for the graphics processors to handle, but at the right scale everything runs smoothly as expected. Once I support custom scaling between puzzles (#49) this side-effect will be resolved.

There is another bug that I’ve found, however. I’ll create a new issue for it.
