in order to clean up my other PR #36

Here, I am only removing everything that was ruby 1.8 to ruby 1.9.2 related

Thanks for this -- I've actually gone a bit more aggressive dropping support in master, since ruby seems to move along at a faster clip this days (the 1.8 -> 1.9 leap was a big deal back in the day, but versions since then have been much smoother).
