snap is called "zoom-client", not "zoom" #24

Since everyone thinks of this as being Zoom (not "a client for the Zoom service") and the debs from Zoom themselves are named "zoom.deb", not "zoom-client.deb", perhaps this snap should be called Zoom? It would seem more like the actual product people know and less like some techie version of it.

well, sadly you can not rename snaps that easily ... zoom-client has over 80000 users ... to rename a snap you need to remove the old one from the store and re-pack and re-upload under a newly registered name (see the play0ad and 0ad snaps that went through the same hoops)... all existing installs will be lost, people have to manually remove zoom-client (... lose their settings) and install the new zoom snap.

the popularity caught me by surprise, now that there are so many people i'm hesitant to change the name at the cost of potentially losing half of them.

one thing is was thinking of was to at least ask for an alias so you can execute it as "zoom" instead of "zoom-client" though ...

Sure. But this seems like a good reason to push "allow snap renaming" up the priority list, perhaps, since it's a massively popular app both in the world more generally and in the snap store specifically :-)

I'd like to understand the rationale behind you not choosing "zoom" in the first place. Did you try to get that name and have a dispute warning, or something else? Or did you just go directly to zoom-client without trying zoom first. The reason I ask is because I see people register all kinds of strange named things and I'd love for us to figure out the mindset that makes people do this :D

i often do it because i do not want to steal the official name from a potentially official packager, which was the case here ...

in other cases i pick the namespace explicitly ... like trigger-rally-ogra, to show people in the store that this is not an official package, differs from the "other" one they see etc ... particulary in gnome-software i hate (with passion) the fact that we show debs and snaps with identical names side by side, completely confusing the user ... trigger-rally got its name because of this on purpose ... zoom just because i was careless in the initial packaging.

it would be kinda interesting if upstream does officially support snap tho hehe

ogra1 commented 4 years ago

i have been trying to get in contact with them through our advocacy team, but back then they were suffering under heavy load due to covid-19,

i should probably try again ... especially in the light that the zoom snap is hovering around 120000 users nowadays they perhaps might want to take it to get a solid and safe update mechanism for linux installs :)

Fuseteam commented 4 years ago

yupp that would be great xD on the note of upstream it appears co-hosts cannot share screen on linux just a side note since it seems to be a issue with upstream, not sure if they are aware due to the heavy load

snap alias zoom-client zoom

Fuseteam commented 3 years ago

@matthiasak yes that has been mentioned, it's more about the discoverability than how it is launched from the commandline
