Currently [return] and [tab] trigger the replacement by unicode. I agree with the previous comment that it would be very convenient if [space] also triggered the unicode substitution. Using [space] instead of [return] would also fine with me.
At the moment I often press [space] accidentally (because in the LyX editor [space] works this way) and then have to delete the typed characters and retype them before pressing [tab].
