I see you're listed as the lead for Archiva on http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MRM. I wanted to file an issue there, but I couldn't easily determine how to create an account. I'll report it hear, hoping you will take it to the Archiva jira.

I am following the "Separating the base from the installation" in the standalone guide. In my setup, the base directory is read-only. When I execute "bin/archiva console" from the base directory, it fails to start because it can't write the pid file to "/logs/archiva.pid". I would expect the pid file to be written to "$ARCHIVA_BASE/logs/archiva.pid".
