App stops after receiving email notification #152

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start Audio Stream
2. Receive incoming message in K-9 Mail and receive audio notification
3. App stops streaming and NPR app icon in notification bar disappears

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
App should continue after email notification.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
2.3 on Android 2.3.4 on Droid Bionic.

I get the same trouble.  Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.1) on Galaxy Nexus.

npr android app version name: 2.3, version code: 7230

I'll add that the app hangs for some extended period of time (10s of seconds to 
a couple minutes) when the notification interrupts the audio stream.  This 
happens when connected via wifi or mobile data.

It also happens with other event notifications than the standard email app 
(e.g., new mail via gmail, text messages).

In some cases after the extended audio outage (and app hang), the stream might 
resume (after minutes).

If you catch it quick enough after the notification (seconds), you can press a 
key and have the app respond (e.g., the stop button) at least with a click and 
possibly a change in the gui (e.g., the square stop button might change to the 
triangular play button).  But the next attempt to press a key will have no 
immediate effect and the 'App is not responding ...' dialog pops up (with 
Wait/Report/OK option buttons).

And another with a bit more context and some timeline comments...

(a) 15:15:04 - notification received, app hangs
(b) about 15:16  - app popped up quite some time after trying to switch to it
(c) 15:16:30 - audio starts playing again; note that I did hit the stop button 
(yes, the stop button) once shortly after (b), but there was no immediate 
visible response

Thanks for fixing this, by the way.  Confirmed fix.  Now when a notification 
happens, the stream is interrupted briefly and starts back up within a couple 
seconds.  I've seen other apps that lower the volume during the audible 
notification alert instead.  Maybe a future option?

But things are much better now as I don't have to fumble with the phone to 
restart the stream while on the bike :)

like johneh says, this fix works but it causes an annoying delay whenever there 
is a notification. it also appears to restart the streaming which causes some 
npr stations (like my KUOW) to rebroadcast a "this stream is brought to you 
by..." message which takes another few seconds away from listening to the 
broadcast. very frustrating.

it seems to me that jophneh's idea of simply turning the volume down instead of 
actually stopping the stream for the notification would be more elegant and 
work better.

Turning the sound down does help with notifications, but the same issue still 
happens on my Samsung Galaxy S4 when I plug in my charging cable, which has no 
audible notification. It acts like tobiasei describes where there's a long 
silence and then my local station reintroduces the stream sponsor...which is 
really annoying!  Also the stream never starts back up after a longer 
interruption like a phone call.

I've just gotten used to the annoying quirks in the npr app... I guess you will 
have to too! :( 

Lately I have started cycling to work and there is one particular spot where I 
don't get good cell reception. The NPR stream dies on me at that spot, then 
doesn't start up again when I am back in range. It fails silently which is what 
I don't like - it would be nice to get an audible notification of some kind to 
inform me that there is a problem, and it would be nice if it would start up 
again when back in range as well! 

I add this comment here because it is related, I think, to the npr app not 
being able to recover properly when interrupted.

Hey, I pay AT&T for 10 GB of data just so I can stream NPR all day work.  And I 
donate to my local NPR network at a significant level.  I don't want to get 
used to it; I want it to work!  :)  Of course, I appreciate that it's a process 
and feedback is the way to help it work better.
