Resolves #8. Adds support for the builder pattern in a backwards-compatible way.

this is a breaking change, but I'm fine with it.

It just needs a merge due to your other PR

Okay, this is now merge-able, but I'm not bumping the version number here, as we're about to need to do so with the other change, and it makes sense to just do a single version number bump.
