Otherwise, it will only return the signal strength of the active network. Furthermore, mmscan doesn't (anymore?) work in combination with coordinates.py if some interfaces don't support scanning.

Anyone with a different *nix distro want to see if this behavior is different?

Based on Riley's advice, I decided to use nm-tool, which doesn't require root access, but assumes that network manager is installed. We might want to use a fallback later, but for now, I am closing this issue.
