I think it would be good to have a field solely dedicated to the references.
I'm saying this because if in an item you have a long text with many references, be it in World, Characters, or Plots, it would be easier to understand the connections by having a field that contains all of them.
Furthermore, I'm also thinking of having a "to" and "from" reference fields, so it's visible which item this one is pointing to and which items are pointing to this one. This would really be wonderful to get an idea of the network of connections.
It should be a non-modifiable field, just displaying the references you have inside the items.
I think that having a tab here would be good since it would be easy to see while working, but anywhere else is fine too.
This is how I'm thinking of it:
I think it could be also used as a replacement for tags if one wants to create a custom section. For Characters, for example. Just create an item with the description of type, and anything else you have in mind, and every time you create a character you can reference to that item. If you want to have a list of the types, just enter that item and you have all of them in the "Referenced from:" field.
