Character informations options #606

I just finished the great book from K.M. Weiland on how to write characters arcs and I would like to incorporate the "Need, Want, lie and ghost" in the character section of Manuskript. For now, i put it in note, but would it be possible in the future to make the character section adaptable to the kind of organisation we use? (here a quick summary I found on the web : https://www.helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com/write-character-arcs/) In the same breath, I'm curious to know if there are plans to add more "meta" options in the plot section. I just started the book of Truby on writing a good story and he strongly criticize the 3 act structure and propose something new (here a quick recap I found on the web : https://lukejames7.wordpress.com/scriptwriting/22-steps-notes/). Maybe it could be included?

The Manuskript team has done a marvelous job and the software is emenently useful as is. Still, there are things that could be better. In that regard I've previously asked for the ability to define arbitrary templates, which would eliminate the need for coding things into the software. As is, the Character/Basic info section, like the Summary, is based upon the character development steps in Ingermanson's Snowflake Method of novel writing. They are actually rather similar to Weiland's approach. However, if you want to use Weiland's approach you can write up a set of questions in the Character/Notes section and copy the raw format into each character you add. Clumsy, but workable. Send me an e-mail address and I can help you with that (and other Weilandisms).

Truby (not Turby) is right about Act divisions being arbitrary, but I think he overstates the issue. The divisions are quite arbitrary, and you can ignore them is you want. And Manuskript doesn't include them when creating a project. However, many writing guru's use Act divisions as reference points, so there is some usefulness. In any event there is no linkage between any of the documents in a project and Plot entries, so I find Plot less than helpful. (BTW, I also created a set of documents that implement his 22 Steps that I put into a document tree off the root of the document/folder tree.)

Very interesting. Thanks.

@Phieldar Truby definitely overinflates the issue to sound more guruish and original. Act breaks are there simply to organize your work. If you don't like the three act structure, consider Shakespeare divided it a little further: into five acts. It's just a tool.
