Build static library by default on some platforms, until 2.0.x? #313

Since no efforts will be made to preserve binary or source compatibility between releases until 2.0.x, (at which point development will move to a 2.1.x branch), it might be a good idea to build static libs by default on platforms where one typically installs libs in the system.

We can probably keep building DLLs for Windows, as those are typically included with the application.
