How about updating icon set to this one:
https://github.com/marcoceppi/bootstrap-glyphicons
This is the same set as already used in the extension but it looks like we can set a flag to render icons with better quality for retina/high-res displays
Also a subset of font awesome is an option probably at least it is properly scalable.
