A lot of good information here and the overall strategy of the cloud smart is well laid out. This is a good next step from the Cloud First initiative to take the government IT modernization and digital transformation initiatives to the next level. I have three specific inputs on this document. >> One area that could be considered is the framework and the blueprints that work with available technologies and best practices to suit the requirements and mission of agencies. The technology and the tools that enable the IT modernization can be generalized and made available in a form that provide playbooks and plans. This Cloud-Smart strategy rightfully called out the use of best practices and sharing of the this information. Use of these resources could be made available for anyone that is working on the IT modernization efforts. The tools and framework could be generalized to a point that the playbooks could be used with little or no delays and could be applied to the existing implementations. \n >> The second item that I would like to mention is that the efforts towards standardizing the identity management and the security and activities must also be considered. As part of the Cloud Smart initiative and playbooks the actions will need to be iteratively reviewed and improved over time to keep up with the changing market and emerging technologies. \n >> The role of serverless and microservices architectures in IT modernization efforts shall be considered. This involves utilizing the modern architectures to move the compute related tasks to the serverless realm and redesign processes to make use of these patterns. This enables the agencies to allow application developers to choose relevant programming languages and modernize existing legacy applications to leverage the serverless and microservices frameworks. Government agencies, where possible, should work towards the Infrastructure to Platform to Function -as-a-Service (IaaS to PaaS to FaaS) in their modernization journey and use the relevant technologies, toolsets and processes. \n Look forward to more direction and agency specific actions in the next few months. Appreciate the thought, efforts and leadership in this important area for the government.
