As discussed, I think that we should obscure the main window controls (E.g tree, top toolbar etc) when you open an image-viewer and just leave a list of thumbnails for the current dataset (E.g. like facebook or twitter). This keeps it cleaner from a usability point of view and is technically easier, less to test etc. Allowing the image itself to be "full screen" with the controls in floating panels is also nice (E.g. like OMERO.figure). Many of these features are combined in some of the videos at http://www.orbicule.com/macnification/screencasts/
These are mockups of conceptual designs for use of the centre pane as the Full Viewer.
Still at very early stage, and done under time pressure so much of the interaction needs more thorough thinking through.
Please add comments and feedback.
Looks at issues:
Current web client - main window with open viewer. All other mockups based on this main window for scale.
Default view would be broadly same as current Changes:
Using the centre pane as the viewer. Thumbnails in strip at bottom of centre pane - this is typically dead space Where the Z and T scrollers go open to change Normal, split channel and projection buttons in context toolbar
Using full window as viewer LHP and RHP collapse into bars to sides - can be clicked to expand them out Again - where the Z and T scrollers go open to change
Showing full-window view with rendering settings displayed in RHP Removed preview image Kept tab name as preview for present
Slit pane view Four images selected (may have to be max) Contextual toolbar allows linking of sliders and zoom (Need to have "Reset" button in there)
However the Figure paradigm might be a better display for this purpose - so select figure from drop-down
Centre pane display becomes like Figures's "canvas" RHP preview tab contains Figure-like controls
Likewise may want a particular viewer for big images Select Big Images from the drop-down Get full window view but with birds-eye etc.
ROIs tab in RHP would give all the expected controls (For the moment just pure copy of Management Tool layout and functionality)
Would be useful to be able to go to full-window view and high zoom for tasks needing more control e.g. fine measurements
