[x] fix fatal "compile" error (DropBox 5.6.0 could never have worked)

Initial pass during testing on ome-training-4 by @pwalczysko. There may be other gremlins, but we are in a much better situation.

Mistake on my part: this PR should have included a CHANGELOG entry (but not a change of the version number. That's handled by bumpversion. cc: @will-moore)
