In theory, every 10x droplet contains a constant amount of RNA: the cell barcodes.
If barcodes that don't get fused to a read are not removed by the protocol at some point, we could get a "reference mRNA estimate" by counting the number of barcodes in a cell.
This could be achieved by aligning short reads to the 10x barcode whitelist.
