Add tests to confirm that the tool works as expected

We can add a pre-task to set up test framework (and maybe code coverage) to this since it would need to be done before writing the actual unit tests. It could also be a separate ticket i.e. set up vs writing the actual tests but could be done as part of this as well cc @pld
