[U] Enhancements to English Translations and Standardization to British English #225

Firstly, I want to express my deep appreciation for the incredible work you have done with this website. Reading the stories on this site has profoundly moved me, and I have shed tears multiple times. The memorials serve as a powerful reminder of the struggles of the transgender community, and your dedication to preserving these memories is commendable.

I have made several updates to the English translations on your site. While I am not a native Chinese speaker and possess only a very basic understanding of Mandarin Chinese, I have done my utmost to enhance the English content. Here are the details of my contributions:

Rationale for British English: I believe British English is a more appropriate standard for the site, as it is widely understood globally and provides a sense of formality and respect that aligns well with the solemn and respectful nature of a memorial website. British English is also commonly used in international publications, which may help in reaching a broader audience.

Intentional Retention of Original Wording: On some pages, I have intentionally not fixed certain grammatical errors or mistranslations. I felt that changing too many words of the deceased could be seen as disrespectful, so I kept these alterations to a very minor amount to preserve the original sentiment as much as possible.

If you need any further feedback or revisions, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am eager to contribute to this meaningful project and am open to any suggestions or additional changes you might have.

感谢您对本项目的关注和支持，针对您提出的问题想作一点说明：

  1. 对于所指出的拼写和文法问题我们会及时修正，再次表示感谢
  2. 该项目原则上是共同创作的，因而从源头上未必能保证语言规范的统一
  3. 考虑到大部分作者和翻译者的语言环境，本项目中的英文更接近en_CA而非en_GB
  4. 个人认为应当给予条目贡献者更多的表达自由

  2. This project is co-authored so a unified writing style is out of our consideration
  3. I agree more about preserving the original sentiment given that most grammar checkers won't offer an option for Canadian English

I was aware there might be some spelling and grammar mistakes since I wasn't using automated spell checking tools. I'll review your corrections one by one and incorporate automated spell checkers into further translations.

About American English or Canadian English vs British English:

  1. American English is also widely understood globally. Canadian English is very similar to American English.
  2. Formality or respect is not about the specific English dialect. It's about if the localization can express the original meanings clearly and dynamically.
  3. We do not believe the use of British English correspond to outreach.

We'll keep Canadian English for now.
