When I see an executable used for installation sitting on a drive somewhere, I will be able to determine what version will be installed. When I am installing any MVON# components, I will know what version I am installing.
When I encounter any MVON# components already installed, I can inspect the installation in some way (e.g. Help or About menu item in MV# Developer Studio) to identify the build or version number. A customer or prospect will be able to tell us what version of the software they have.
I will know what the version number is for the software build we are currently delivering as it will be the one we can all see in some protected box.com or other account.
Based on the version number, I will be able to determine whether that version has a particular feature or not. [This is optional for now as I recognize this is more expensive.]
