First set of changes after initial fork of the original repo.

In this PR:

Clean up duplicate entries in locale files
Lint all YAML locale files
Convert README to markdown
Update README with new information and history
Update license to exclusively MIT
Add test coverage for monkey patched methods
Update Ruby version in gemspec
Update gem versions in Gemfile.lock
