morph:Head #10

In compounding, a head is the element that defines the syntactic characteristics of the compound. Should be subproperty of morph:CompoundingRelation. Issue is to decide how to name it:

  1. morph:Head: potentially misleading, in older literature, "head" can also be used for suffixes, but using morph:head in this way entails that suffixes would be part of compounding relations. This can be solved by putting a note into the document.
  2. morph:CompoundHead (current name) doesn't align well with morph:Compound*ing*Relation. So this will be an invitation for errors.
  3. morph:CompoundingHead is consistent with morph:CompoundingRelation, but the dynamic aspect of "compounding" (which is intended) doesn't fit the more static notion of head.

The reason for not to go with morph:Head has been the recent introduction of frac:head (a property that points from a collocation to the word that the collocation scores are about). That risk is minimal as both reside in different namespaces, they are unlikely to co-occur (collocations are normally not conducted over morphemes) and one is a property whereas the other is a class, but it was felt that there is a risk for confusion.
