Hi all, I'm Mina and I'm a UX designer who is new to Austin as well as someone who's trying to start learning about local gov. I'd love to help you achieve your design goals for this initiative!
Hi Mina, I'd love for you to get involved. I'm actually having a meeting this Wednesday, November 8th at 2:30pm about the project. If you're available, I'd love for you to attend!
If not, let me know some dates/times when you're free and hopefully we can meet again soon.

Hey @MinaK and @AmyStansbury. I have another UXer( @anu007 ) Who might be of help as well. IDK how the team looks right now but my understanding is that Anue is more of a junior UXer.
@MinaK she might be help in any work you do and be able to provide feedback and ideas. I've found in the past that working with another designer on a project has helped me stay accountable and get out of my own head. Let us know if she would be of help in some capacity and we'd love an update here on how your Wednesday meeting goes.
@VictoriaODell An extra person would be great! I'll be at Amy's meeting tomorrow at 2:30, and will definitely update you guys.
@anu007 Let me know if you're available to chat on the phone or over coffee some time.
Hi @MinaK, Sorry somehow I missed the e-mail.It will be great to meet in person and discuss the project. Please let me know when you are free to grab a coffee.Thank you. Thanks, @VictoriaODell for connecting me to @MinaK and to project.
Hey @anu007, @MinaK , and @AmyStansbury !
Just checking to see if y'all were able to get any work done or if help is still needed for this coming year.
It should be noted that amy currently has this: http://austineconetwork.com/civics-101/
and released a zine kickstarter that I'm having trouble finding the link to.
@VictoriaODell Sorry for the late reply! Yes, we've seen the econetwork site + the zine. We actually worked off the zine to develop the new site. I'll get in touch with the other folks for our current status :)
Very nice website @AmyStansbury! I'm wondering if this project should be marked as completed, or if we should still be on the lookout for volunteers interested in working on it.
What problem are we trying to solve?
Voter turnout in Austin is shockingly low, especially for millennials. In Austin's last mayoral election, only 15 percent of registered voters cast a ballot (and millennials made up less than 5 percent of the already very small electorate). And the problem extends beyond voting. Many Austinites don't even know the name of the mayor, let alone their City Council person.
This is where Civics 101 comes in. Civics 101 is a new initiative that teaches millennials in Austin how to engage with and participate in local government. So far, we've been doing this with a series of in-person talks and a "Guide to Local Government" coloring book, but it is difficult to reach large numbers of people in this way. Now, we're ready to take our information online, by creating an interactive and educational Civics 101 website that will:
Who will benefit (directly and indirectly) from this project?
Everyone will benefit from this project! I truly believe that democracy only works when everyone gets involved. Today, Austin's low civic participation rates hurt everyone. When only a few people participate in government, those with the most extreme views often win. That's why it's important to bring more people into the conversation. Civics 101 can help do that.
Where can we find any research/data available/articles?
We currently have a small Civics 101 website page, with some basic information, but as you can see, it isn't very exciting or user friendly. We want to transform this into its own website that really walks you through the info you need to become a more active citizen of Austin - all in 20 minutes or less! http://austineconetwork.com/civics-101/
What help is needed at this time?
We have already taken this project through one hackathon, so we have a basic design layout already nearly complete. What we need now is some additional design help, as well as some assistance in turning the design into a reality. We are looking for UX designers, as well as Wordpress developers.
What are the next steps (validation, research, coding, design)?
See above.
