My Building Doesn't Recycle #13

Open mateoclarke opened 9 years ago

mateoclarke commented 9 years ago

One sentence description: Austin has a Zero Waste goal to reach by 2040. Part of this plan is the Universal Recycling Ordinance (URO) that will require landlord and property managers to provide convenient recycling to their tenants. This tool would call out large property land owners that are not in compliance with the URO

Link (more details/brain dump/alpha) Chicago has implemented a crowdsourcing app called My Building Doesn't Recycle http://mybuildingdoesntrecycle.com/

And the code is open source https://github.com/open-city/recycling

Project Needs (dev/design/resources) To fork, need Node.js develop(ers)

Status (in progress, pie-in-the-sky) pie-in-the-sky fork idea

Hi, I am the editor of a community-driven environmental news site here in Austin called the Austin EcoNetwork. (Hi Mateo - I actually think we met at the Hack 4 Change event in June). I absolutely love this idea! As someone who writes about these issues everyday, I know that the city needs an app like this. Although I am not a programmer myself, I want to be a part of making this project happen and am willing to help out in any way that I can. What do you guys need to make this happen?

Once somebody actually sets up the server, we'll definitely need help promoting this project.

There's been some discussion about this project on the #austinrecycles channel on http://open-austin.slack.com. @AmyStansbury I can send you an invite if you let me know what your email address is (you can email it to me at ldawoodjee@gmail.com).

Hey @AmyStansbury! Yeah we did meet at the hackathon.

We have some good interests in this project, we just need a Node/Javascript developer to jump into forking the original repo and making it work for Austin. If you want to come out our Civic Hack Night next week, we could pitch this project to the group and see if anyone has the right skillset.

I could also connect you to some of the folks in Chicago that created this project originally so you could hear how successful it was/is.

Hi, I'm Claire, and I worked on My Building Doesn't Recycle (Chicago). I'm happy to help in any way I can and can ask Ben and Alex (developers on the project) if they have time to give any pointers. I'm so glad you want to implement this in Austin!

Relevant news story from this weekend: Austin American Statesman: As recycling levels off, should Austin require residents to do more?

HUNGARYYY commented 9 years ago

I'm going to fork and try hacking on this over the next week. If anyone is already working on this or wanting to help, ping me at phz@sdf.org

luqmaan commented 9 years ago

@phzpw there's more discussion going on in the #austinrecycles slack channel. You can join the slack via http://slack.open-austin.org

Hi! What's the status of this project? I know we have a fork of this repo here, but was it ever deployed? What's the relationship with Recycling ATX? Should interested parties head there?
