Stop usgin google maps since the api 2 is not working anymore.

Open Street map?

API v2 still working until May 19, 2013 (thus need fix map.php file) so you're right it's time to move ahead

and a free version of the API v3 is available

I think the entire maps feature should be checked since was developed really long time a go. I don't mind about the provider, but to use one that works good ;)
