how would anybody estimate the frequency of such autapses?

I haven't gotten a clear answer on this. I'm not talking about a circuit that goes Neuron A - Neuron B - Neuron A, but rather: Neuron A (Axon) - Neuron A (Dendrite)

Sparse neuronal imaging methods? We don't know yet would be a cool answer! I've heard people affirm and deny these...

not sure how a sparse neural modeling method would be able to count these. can you elaborate?

Is there any reason for these to exist? The concept of a self-synapsing neuron doesn't make sense to me; what is the purpose?
I'm not sure how frequent these synapses are in the brain as a whole, but there are a number of regions that express self-synapsing neurons. They're generally used for stimulus-tuning purposes in sensory areas or for pattern-recognition in hippocampus (specifically the CA3 region). However, most neurons seem to have a strong self-avoidance feature during development.
What's the current literature on self-synapsing neurons?
I haven't gotten a clear answer on this. I'm not talking about a circuit that goes Neuron A - Neuron B - Neuron A, but rather: Neuron A (Axon) - Neuron A (Dendrite).
Do these exist?
