Hive Plots #76

Not sure where to actually post this, but I thought it was neat and wanted to share. My husband discovered something called hive plot, which plots networks using arcs instead of straight lines. If you want to check it out, here's the linksp: http://www.hiveplot.net Does anyone know if anything like this is being used? Could it be used to show brain networks more clearly, since this would be a more 3-D and potentially more realistic (visually) model?

Here's an example of hive plots being used for the C. elegans connectome (i.e., mapping the mind of a worm!): http://www.frontiersin.org/10.3389/conf.fninf.2013.09.00032/event_abstract

I found a paper utilizing hive plots as a tool for better visualizing networks. Like you said, hive plots seem to be a simpler, more convenient method to use.

"Hive plots depict network structure transparently, are simple to understand and can be easily tuned to identify patterns of interest. The method is computationally straightforward, scales well and is amenable to a plugin for existing tools."
