GitOps principles 1.0 translations #53

Open pensarguet opened 2 years ago

Hi openGitOps team,

As principles reached version 1.0, I was wondering if you think valuable to have some translations to ease the spread? If yes, how would you like to manage this? dedicated i18n folder + tagging which markdown files need to be considered ? I can manage it for french with some reviewers.

Best, Philippe

Happy to contribute as well to the French translations. I may need to translate some of the content anyway to share with some colleagues internally. Once we have some directions on how to organize things we can start.

heubeck commented 2 years ago

I'm in for German.

Some work already started on the pre-final principles here: https://github.com/gitops-working-group/gitops-working-group/issues/161

But there's in general need for an i18n structure, I guess.

roberthstrand commented 2 years ago

When an i18n structure is in place, I can translate it to Norwegian.

@pensarguet @roberthstrand @schlomo @oliviergaumond @heubeck: as people who have volunteered to help with translations, let's revisit this issue.

The principles have a 1.0 release. Translations have been discussed in WG meetings and consensus continues to be that translations would be fantastic!

How can we help unblock this?

Suggestion: IMO the value of translating these is more important than the exact i18n implementation to start. We don't have very complicated needs like an entire docs site with many moving parts – there are only two files to translate, PRINCIPLES and GLOSSARY – both in the open-gitops/documents repo. We could add translated versions of these two files to a translations dir there to start. Any strong objections?

heubeck commented 2 years ago

sounds great @scottrigby so a directory i18n containing PRINCIPLES_[a-z]{2}.MD and GLOSSARY_[a-z]{2}.MD for each language.

shall we just send PRs, and have the discussion about each language in there?

scottrigby commented 2 years ago

@heubeck sounds good to me! As long as people are unblocked from making progress on this. Thank you 😄

Principles and Glossary - German Version

Everyone, who is interested in participating on the initial German translation is invited to join us at the 8th of February in the (middle European) evening: https://jug-in.bayern/page/java-treff/

Our local Java User Group (which not only cares about Java of course) will host a virtual meetup to work on the German translation and eventually provide it als PR.

There's no registration need, just join and be part of it.

schlomo commented 2 years ago

Hi all, unfortunately I don't have enough time to contribute much here at this moment. Big thanks to @heubeck for picking this up and continuing to drive the (German) translation.

Just a thought, should there be a standing issue for translation? If so, when is it ever marked as "done"? I'm fine for keeping this open "perpetually" but would like to hear what others think.

Maybe but a hint on the website, that translations are desired, pointing to the i18n/Readme, where the "process" of adding languages can be described.

That way, more people will see it, as just with an issue.

New languages could be discussed via GH discussions, and with every update of the principles itself, there could be explicit issues created for each langugage version to be updated.
