Welcome to OLS-2! This issue will be used to track your project and progress during the program. Please use this checklist over the next few weeks as you start Open Life Science program tada.

Week 1 (31 August - 4 September 2020): Meet your mentor!

• [x] Check if you have access to the HackMD notes set up for your meetings with your mentor
• [x] Prepare to meet your mentor(s) by completing a short homework provided in the HackMD notes

Before Week 2 (7 - 11 September 2020): Cohort Call (Welcome to Open Life Science!)

• [x] Create an issue on the OLS-2 GitHub repository for your OLS work and share the link to your mentor.

Before Week 4 (21 - 25 September 2020): Cohort Call (Tooling and roadmapping for Open projects)

Week 5 and later

• [x] Create a GitHub repository for your project
• [x] Add the link to your repository in your issue
• [x] Use your canvas to start writing a README.md file, or landing page, for your project

Vision statement - original

We are working with the open-science neuroscience community in Montreal to create Open Science Office Hours (OSOH), where trainees will get regular 1-on-1 help with making their research more open and reproducible.

Our goal is to help research trainees use open-science practices in their research, and in line with this, the organization of OSOH will be open and community driven.

I think you are doing a great job. I found your road map really clear but I could not access your open canvas so you need to change the link for that.

@koudyk I love the idea of office hours and 1:1 help. It's like an open science consulting firm. I'd love to see the canvas as well. Have you thought about expanding beyond Montreal? Or even an open science consulting booth at dept retreats, conferences, etc.?

@EKaroune and @joyceykao, thanks for pointing out the broken link! It looks like it's working now.

EKaroune, great point about expanding beyond Montreal. That's on my mind from the beginning. But I wanted to start with a manageable scope for getting funding and traction. There are at least 4 universities in Montreal with neuroscience grad students, so I feel like focusing on Montreal is still ambitious.

Re the booth at conferences, etc., that's a really interesting idea. My dept. holds a big retreat every year, and that would be a great place to reach new students (esp if we can get swag...). It's definitely something to keep in mind, thanks!!

Vision statement - updated 2020-09-21

What are we doing? We want to start Open Science Office Hours (OSOH) for neuroscience graduate students in Montreal. In this space, students could get regular 1-on-1 help making their research more open and reproducible. We will hire more-experienced students to host OSOH as paid Teaching Assistants.

Why are we doing this? Many grad students learn open-science skills at short events like summer schools and hackathons. But they may not have continuous in-lab support for integrating what they learn into their everyday research.

How will we do this? In line with our focus on open science, the organization of OSOH will be open and community driven. For specifics, see our Roadmap.

Where will this happen? We will begin focusing on neuroscience graduate students in Montreal, Canada. OSOH will be online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When will this happen? We will begin OSOH in the summer of 2021, after Montreal's BrainHack School.

Not at all. Contains all the relevant info to understand what you are trying to create.

No, it works. My personal preference is to have them as statements rather than questions... but I think it works well as is.

In our last mentor meeting we discussed the fact that we #14 are only on the other side of the mountain, here in Montreal.

Obviously there is substantial overlap, as well as a clear distinction, between what we would like to achieve during OLS-2, and into the future.

Perhaps, we could talk after the cohort call on Thursday.

Also, I have spoken to @joyceykao #8, who's project also has some overlap with ours... Given that we will need some similar content (especially in french), we could see how we can co-develop some of this stuff ...

Vision Statement - updated 2020-09-24

What are we doing? Open Science Office Hours (OSOH) is an online space where students can get regular help making their research more open. Many grad students learn open-science skills at short events like summer schools and hackathons. But they may not have continuous in-lab support for using what they learn in their everyday research. We hope to support such students and integrate them into the open-science community so they feel empowered to do open science.

For who? In our first year, we're holding OSOH for neuroscience graduate students in Montreal, Canada. We may expand beyond this field and location in the future.

With who? In line with our focus on open science, the organization of OSOH will be open and community driven. We will hire more-experienced students to host OSOH as paid Teaching Assistants. We warmly welcome contributors! See our [Contributor Guide]() and [Code of Conduct]() if you're interested.

Hi @koudyk ! I really like your idea and the vision statement is very clear. I think starting out the points as questions is really useful! I tried to look at your Open Canvas but it looks like it links to a different project; could you double check this?
