VISION STATEMENT The Open Innovation in Life Sciences Association is working with early career life science researchers to help them understand what open science is so that they can use the tools of open science in their every day research routines. Open science accelerates research outcomes and reduces effort redundancy, which is why we want to immerse the leaders of tomorrow (ECRs) in open science culture for an open research future.

samvanstroud commented 4 years ago

Hi Joyce and Christina :). This sounds like a really valuable project! Your vision statement is clear and concise for me, so I am almost against suggesting that you add more information to it! Nevertheless, after reading, I was left wondering about a couple of things:

Looking forward to hearing more about this project!

Tai-Rocha commented 4 years ago

Hi, it's a really nice vision and especially about innovation. As well as samvanstroud, I also want know a bit more product that you'll prepare , specially if it's a kind of guide of good practices and innovations in in overall field of science

joyceykao commented 4 years ago

@samvanstroud @Tai-Rocha, Thanks for the comments. OILS started as a 2-day conference in 2018 solely run by ECRs. We actively recruit ECRs every year for the conference fundraising and organization. This kind of engagement gets ECRs who are interested in event organization/project management and curious about open science involved in the open science community. They come up with the program every year of what topics to hold discussion panels on and who to invite. Recently, we are expanding to organize (in partnership) with other local OS entities to bring external OS courses teaching things like ELNs, data management, git, etc. into the local life science community.

I guess after a couple rounds of talks with our mentor, it's becoming apparent that we are building a local OS community as a product. The idea is to get ECRs curious and connected to the wider international open science community.

There are a lot of super interesting projects here (and maybe future partners?). ;)

Vision Statement post-Hemingway editor:

Open science (OS) accelerates research outcomes and reduces effort redundancy. OILS wants to build an open research ecosystem in Swiss life sciences. We work with ECRs to help them understand what OS is and how they can use OS tools in their every day research routine.

And post-Up Goer (not a fan of this one-feels super vague)... For our idea, we work together with people who do not know know or struggle how to be completely open in their job for a good cause. It is time to especially talk to young people and make sure they understand that opening up is best to recognize and respond to problems in their field . We have to help and make sure to give them the very best answer for their serious questions. This will add power to their cause and promises a practical return of their hard work. If we do this right, it will give our work more attention and make the entire world a better place.

Hi @joyceykao, sounds like a really great project. Particularly love the ECR focus -- we are the future after all :) Where is the conference/community normally located? At present, the vision statement is very clear and concise, but doesn't give the impression that this is a local community.

On a related note, have you considered moving to an online conference for this year or next, given the pandemic? Could be an opportunity to expand your reach and connect with a global audience of ECRs, as I'm sure there are many out there who would love to attend (myself included). I have a bit of experience with these things now as I managed the APAC hub of the OHBM Open Science Room this year, and would be happy to advise/help out if so.

Hi @joyceykao, I just looked at your open canvas and I really look forward to seeing how this develops! I am also interested in how you will set up the website to enable content contributions from various users, since we are tackling a similar problem.

Also, to second Cooper's question, for the online resources, would you consider expanding the audience to everyone outside of Switzerland too?

WasifaRahman commented 4 years ago

Hello @joyceykao ! You have a great vision statement. As I am recently a graduated student of Biotechnology from Bangladesh and leading a project in old-2 I am very much enthusiast to have knowledge and idea from resources and research ideas your team is working on. Great concept and want to see your project reaching high by fulfilling your vision and mission.

KateSimpson commented 4 years ago

Hi @joyceykao great to see your open canvas and hear about your work in the open call just now. I will be keen to see how it develops and what I can learn to apply to the building energy sector. I am also interested to hear whether your open approach might stretch into architecture via firm you work in? This could relate to my work in decarbonising housing through low carbon refurbishment and developing an open protocol :)

Open science accelerates research outcomes and reduces effort redundancy, which is why we want to immerse the leaders of tomorrow (ECRs) in open science culture for an open research future.

Hi @joyceykao - interesting vision. How will you identify ECRs to introduce to Open Science? Is this a geographically scoped project or... ?

And how does this relate to other similar initiatives?

joyceykao commented 3 years ago

@pvanheus Thanks for leaving a comment! I'll try to answer your questions below.

How we identify/attract ECRs to OILS: We have been holding an annual Open Innovation in Life Sciences conference since 2018 (currently the planning of the 4th edition is underway). Many ECRs come to this 2-day conference because we also include career development keynotes and workshops. Usually this is when we do some of the recruiting to get the next year's conference planning committee in addition to advertising via email mailing lists in our local (e.g. Swiss) network. The ECRs who join and participate in OILS discover open science by plannning the next year's open science/career development conference (with a bit of guidance and tapping into speaker networks from the alumni of OILS). ;)

Our current geographical scope: We are focusing our efforts atm on Swiss universities (particulaly those around Zurich and Basel), but we typically attract a a portion of international attendees to our annual conference every year. While we focus our efforts on our local community, we do try to advertise broadly and welcome the participation of others from anywhere on the globe.

How does OILS relate to similar initiatives: We see ourselves a little bit like a Swiss-based open science 'megaphone' or networker in the sense that we also promote other initiatives and encourage particpation if it falls in line with our OS vision and mission. We also support other initiatives and entities who want to come in and engage with our community. We sometimes act as an event planning/logistics service for anyone in open science who wants to connect with Swiss unviersities with local events.
