Meeting Minutes/Key Points
Alex Thornton discussed the increasing demands placed on the electric power grid by the growing use of distributed energy resources, diverse loads, and the heightened power requirements of AI and data centers. He emphasized the resulting opportunities for technological innovations that can smooth demand curves, enhance interoperability, and embed intelligence across various segments of the grid—from central systems to residential areas. These technologies are crucial for enabling these segments to collaborate, interoperate, and communicate effectively, thus building a more resilient, renewable, and sustainable energy network. Thornton highlighted that these developments align closely with the goals of the ORES Working Group: to foster interoperability through open standards and facilitate the development of renewable energy solutions that bolster the grid's overall health and resilience.
John Mertic shared with the WG on LF energy Standards and Specifications:
Overview of LF Energy Standards and Specifications (LFSS):
LFESS serves as the governance infrastructure for standards work within LF Energy, guided by the Joint Development Foundation (JDF) model.
This framework supports a range of industry efforts, an example of an LFESS based project is the Green Software Foundation.
Licensing and Intellectual Property (IP) Considerations:
Discussed the unique licensing needs for standards versus software, particularly for international standards.
Introduced the Community Specification model, which allows for spec development on GitHub, facilitating easier participation and transparency.
IP Contribution Models:
Two primary models were outlined:
Implicit Model: By contributing, participants automatically grant necessary patent licenses for their contributions, promoting barrier-free involvement.
Explicit Model: Involves signing the LFSS Participation Agreement, a more formal process that ensures clear IP rights and patent pledges.
Further expert guidance on IP contribution models is expected to finalize approaches that best support the goals of ORES.
WG agrees on the next meeting starting at 8am PT May 16th, monthly.
WG agrees that during each meeting, WG will review the discussions on the mailing list and further develop the standards collectively.
Action Items:
[x] Set up next zoom meeting calendar
Future Meeting Agenda Submissions/Proposals
