Looking for an expert for an Otel beginner Q and A session #4813

Open LisaHJung opened 1 month ago

Hello everyone,

My name is Lisa and I just joined the OTel Community!

@svrnm and I were chatting about how I can contribute to the community as a beginner.

One of the ideas was to record a Q and A session between me and an Otel expert and turning this into a video and or a blog.

Many beginners will have same questions as I do. This project will help the newcomers clear up misconceptions and help them hone in on key steps to have a successful experience with Otel.

I am looking for someone who loves to mentor a newcomer and would like to be a part of this potential project.

If you are interested, please say hello on this thread.

Looking forward to connecting with you all!

Thanks @LisaHJung!

@open-telemetry/docs-approvers / @open-telemetry/sig-end-user-approvers can you both take a look? Lisa asked me if I can either do it or recommend someone to a Q&A session with her on learning around opentelemetry, and I suggested to start with this issue AND do a recording that we can share on https://www.youtube.com/@otel-official

Wouldn't be better to collect questions first and make video/FAQ page responding to those?

LisaHJung commented 1 month ago

Thanks @svrnm !

Hi @simi! You have a great point.

Whether this is done live or I create content afterwards doesn't matter to me! I have lots of questions and I am looking for a mentor who I can ask questions, bounce ideas off of, and ask for a tech review on content I create.

I could create more organized and targeted content if I do create the content after the q and a sesh but if the Otel community prefers more of a live talk, I can absolutely do that as well!

I love this idea! I can see how our Q&A sessions in the end-user SIG can sometimes be a little too advanced for folks that are only starting with OTel. I'll add this topic to the agenda of our next end-user SIG catch up. I would like to discuss how the end-user SIG sees a session like this: would it be better to have someone from the end-user SIG answering questions, or a perhaps a spec approver?

svrnm commented 1 month ago

I think it would be great if the people doing that session are both experienced with sitting in front of a camera and creating such content, which means they can focus on the conversation, the asking the question and the finding the answer. I would even say I would prefer them in the video looking for an answer together in docs/spec, vs working with pre-fabricated answers, this would allow people to see in action how they can explore our ecosystem.

In slack @musingvirtual suggested @avillela or @henrikrexed to work with @LisaHJung on that.

henrikrexed commented 1 month ago

it is a great idea. i did no see the message in slack...which channel?

Super down to help out. And to for the End User SIG to help run this as zoom/stream,as @danielgblanco suggested.
