I'd like to ... update the website - wiki data integrations - in preparation for Ronin Lightning Talk 7 Dec 2022 / 12p US East Coast / 6p Central Europe #246
I was just talking to @Daniel-Mietchen and would like to update the https://opentraits.org website before the lightening talk at the Ronin Institute of Independent Scholarship at 8 Dec 2022.
The Ronin Institute Lightning Tag Talk series features two Research Scholars presenters who each share a 15-min presentation about their work. The additional time in the event is used for Q&A and open discussion.
Speaker: John LaRocco
Title of talk: Serapeum: Low-cost, scalable hydroponics
Summary of talk: Environmental conditions, including soil degradation, climate, and water shortages, threaten the world food supply. Prior attempts at alternative farming, from urban agriculture and conventional hydroponics, are insufficient by themselves. By combining novel energy generation and genetic optimization, the new Serapeum system offers a potential solution.
Speaker: Jorrit Poelen and Daniel Mietchen
Title of talk: Wikidata as a tool to connect researchers
Summary of talk: Wikidata, a cousin of Wikipedia, captures millions of structured, and interconnected, data entries on any domain of knowledge. We used Wikidata to help biologists connect their works on biological traits. At a Aug 2022 workshop at iDiv in Leizpig, Germany, we showed a prototype connecting people, their study organisms, and publications. This prototype helps answer questions like: What other researchers study the hairiness of bees (Apidae)? Or, what conference do bee researchers attend? And, which tools do bee researchers use in their scientific works? Perhaps this prototype can inspire Ronin scholars to explore shared interests, research topics, methods, and co-collaborators.
