@rachaelgallagher @jmadin et al. I've added a use case for dataset registry review process in our architecture document here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1O-B4fJ-60URy_NODngD3j5NtrFfkzj94zFYDZsd_l3U/edit#bookmark=id.1e47on72nbqp . I am hoping we can use these recent submission as a way to practice the process, perhaps first manually, then start automating parts when needed. I expect this to be clunky at first, perhaps using a little script to generate dataset .md files. Curious to hear your ideas.

Nice! That's a cool tool for making yaml files, thanks @jhpoelen. Regarding the review process, I feel we need to reconcile the ongoing issues with the fields we are asking users to populate first. Will we continue to use all the fields in the google form or ask for a simpler subset? My impression was we were wanting to limit the fields to those in #30 (i.e. doi, name, curator, format, taxonomic scope) and this tracks about to issue #37 about whether we should transition to a web app for new submissions. I'll look there and try to digest these various threads may be a bit unwieldy and overlapping now.

@open-traits-network/editors any ideas on how to process this backlog of dataset registration ?

bmaitner commented 4 years ago

@jhpoelen I was also thinking about that. I seem to recall that we decided on a method where editors review new datasets and use them as a means to connect members with related ideas. I'm not sure that same approach works for datasets that weren't entered by the data owners themselves. I guess that leaves it up to the editors to plug away at this a bit? I'm happy to spend some time creating .md files for these if that is the way we want to go.

jmadin commented 4 years ago

I'm a bit behind on what needs to be done. I'm also happy to enter some; followed by requesting feedback from the dataset owners. @jhpoelen should we start with the yaml you generated above (I believe from the Google Form)? Perhaps @rachaelgallagher has some thoughts / a plan for how to proceed. Divide and conquer -style.

jhpoelen commented 4 years ago

@jmadin @bmaitner For backlog, I'd say to just register them. As far as coordination goes, would it be an idea to chop up the yaml into separate issues, then handle them separately? You can claim an issue by assigning them to yourself. Ideas?

bmaitner commented 4 years ago

@jhpoelen That sounds like an excellent idea. Maybe batches of 4 or 5 would be reasonable to do in a small amount of downtime?

jhpoelen commented 4 years ago

@bmaitner I've split the list up into bite sized chunks as you suggested.

I'd like to offer* a free coffee and a tour of Oakland's Lake Merritt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Merritt) to the person who registers legacy datasets with most grace.

*restrictions apply.

@jhpoelen @jmadin @bmaitner Thanks Jorrit - I've been under the weather and just catching up. Is plane fare included?? Sounds like many of these have already been done. I'll take a look.
