I'll see what I can do.
OK here's a batch of badges. Open to suggestions for improvement. ot_BADGES.pdf
@phylosaurus Something marine? What about a fish instead of the paw print?
I think the decision of what other badges are needed is related to issue #14 . Are these badges going to be displayed on the maps and profiles? If so, perhaps having them focused on common focal taxa, rather than kingdoms, would be better? E.g. Plantae becomes Embryophyta (or just Plants?), then we can add badges for taxa that are commonly represented in the member profiles?
@phylosaurus wow! badges look pretty awesome! I imagine that you are already planning to publish the badges in the various web-friendly formats (e.g., svg / png). Should we create a separate repo for this and the source files (illustrator?) similar to https://github.com/globalbioticinteractions/logo ?
@jhpoelen @jmadin @bmaitner I'm happy to look more into this, but it'll be a full time job designing logos/badges for every group of interest. @rachaelgallagher suggested we keep it at kingdom for now. I think going forward, we can stick with the color codes for kingdom (e.g., all animals shall be orange) and maybe add a few representative taxa as needed (birds, fish, etc). I'll definitely export each individual graphic to svg/png format once things are finalized.
Here's a resource we can use for individual taxa - it's free but we still need to acknowledge people and I'm not quite sure how that would work in our case. http://phylopic.org/ Maybe have users pick/provide their own logos?
The badges really look awesome. I like the idea to use phylopic for lower levels using the color code from the kingdom and the silouette from the lowest taxonomic level available. Phylopic has an API now, http://phylopic.org/api/ including a credit
field if available. So at least for badges we show on individual member pages we can automatically add proper attribution.
+1 . For what it is worth, please note that iNaturalist has a color scheme for various taxa. This scheme was re-used in GloBI's interaction browser and npm plugin (https://www.npmjs.com/package/taxaprisma). For context see https://github.com/globalbioticinteractions/globalbioticinteractions.github.io/issues/41 .
+1 . I like the idea of automating if possible using phylopic. Also, it seems like a good idea to use established color standards where possible (iNaturalist, GloBI). Although we'll like need to add a few colors, and it would be good to tie each color to a phylogenetic node explicitly (e.g. orange seems to be protostomes, blue deuterostomes).
Dan Park will take care of this will have him join the group here
