Use modern JS syntax for exercises.js

While working on #2529, I noticed a few outdated JavaScript elements. Hence, this PR includes the following changes:

• var is replaced by const or let, except for functions
• string concatenation is replaced with string interpolation
• duplicate jQuery selectors are removed
• Use Regex character class rather than single character alternative
• JS type conversion safe comparison
