Dear all,

We just wanted to share some work we've been doing with the community.

EMD and imin have been working on an updated activity list (the “Contributors fork”). We've been accepting input and suggestions from My Local Pitch, Everyone Active, British Triathlon and anyone else who's interested.

We've got a rough process at the moment where we maintain a master list using a tool called Workflowy (https://workflowy.com/s/IYdY.FeWW7TdJWb) and then use this spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dVxPSfjsUIdq8gZWTntS21cjUJb5uG5VeukxucNY4Dk/edit#gid=0) to accept suggestions. For suggestions, we either map them to existing entries in the list or create new entries based on our knowledge of how well-known a particular activity is (via Wikipedia references if we can) or knowledge/evidence of current delivery within the relative sub sectors.

The process isn't perfect, but helps us to move quickly for the purposes of our activity finder while we wait for a more a strategic solution.

From our point of view the previous “master list” was always a work-in-progress and needed a significant amount of work to make it usable. We are very keen, assuming there are no objections from the community, for this Contributors fork list to replace the “master” OpenActive activity list as the new starting point of the activity list, as we have put work in to significantly improve its quality.

The Contributors fork is a superset (contains everything from the old list and more), except for the following entries which we've removed on the following grounds:

And the following entries that has been renamed:

We've also begun to use SKOS "related" to relate things like Salsa and Salsa Fitness, which are very different activities, but which data users might want to include in a "Have you tried Salsa Fitness" type message. This has allowed us to greatly simplify our additions to the hierarchy of the activity list.

Other than that it should be a more comprehensive and better structured version of the same! We're very open to suggestions, and look forward to working with everyone next month to join this up with the wider activity list work that's happening following the last activity list meet we attended a few weeks ago. Medium term we're keen to only maintain one list, so look forward to this all coming together!

Thoughts very welcome!
