Risk Vocabulary #15

In the workshop we discussed possible terms for use in describing Known Risks, Risk Modifiers, and Risk Mitigators - either as a controlled vocabulary, or to provide useful initial values for e.g. drop-downs.

On reflection, I'm not sure the controlled-vocabulary approach will work, as this is a very nuanced area. But there does seem to be value in giving data-providers some useful starting points, precisely because the area is so difficult. The purpose of this issue, then, is to review, and revise and expand if necessary, the existing suggestions.

Currently we have the current range of terms proposed:

Deliberate danger from other people: Known Risks: "incidence of crime", "angry landowners", "events", "known hotspots", "isolation", "racism/hate/harassment of particular sections of society" Risk modifiers: "time of day", "lighting", "season", "specific events" (e.g. marches, demonstrations), "location on route" Risk Mitigators: "being in a group", "carrying an alarm", "daylight", "safety apps", e.g. Safe & the city, "CCTV", "well-lit", "well-used", "police", "known safe locations"

Accidental danger from other people Known Risks: "public holidays", "shared use issues e.g. road traffic, roundabouts, towpaths, cyclists vs walkers", "isolation", "lighting", "availability of crossings" Risk modifiers: "weather", "time of day", "season", "specific events (e.g. football matches, music festivals)", "location on route" Risk mitigators: "hi-viz clothing", "lighting", "chaperoning", "designated safe places (cycle paths)", "well-lit", "designated lanes", "bike/pedestrian sequences on crossings", "marshalls", "guides"

Environmental danger Known risks: "weather", "time of day", "season", "phone signal", "traffic", "terrain (potholes", "quicksand", "cliff edges", "ravines", "narrow paths", "rockfalls)", "wild/farm animals", "domestic dogs", "fenced open spaces", "isolation", "lighting", "pollution/air quality", "plant matter", "narrow road/poor visibility round corners", "no footpath", "steep inclines (especially downhill)", "getting lost" Risk modifiers: "weather", "time of day", "season", "location on route" Risk mitigators: "guide", "being in a group", "equipment", "your physical condition", "preparedness", "lighting", "cycle paths", "amenities", "maps", "fences/guardrails", "marshalls", "mountain rescue", "shallow water", "equipment (e.g. lifejackets)", "warning signs", "directional signage", "fire points", "accreditation (e.g. vscg.org)", risk assessed by recognised org (dated)"

There's a lot of repetition in Risk Modifiers; as distinct values, we're left with:
