In Gnome, a lot of people make use of Topicons or Topicons Plus in order to get the tray icon in the top bar. Topicons Plus development will pause or stop and Topicons is not under active development for a while now (except from a patch for Gnome 3.26 compatibility). Ubuntu will use their own extension from 17.10 on (which will of course use Gnome as the default desktop environment). To get to the point of my story: OpenAmbit is not compatible with this new extension at the moment (tested on Fedora 26). I don't think I'm able to come up code for a pull request, but I do have an example of a patch for Telegram.

Appindicator extension has been around for a long time now: https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator/graphs/contributors , its not something Ubuntu came up with.

It’s still their extension you're linking to, right? I didn’t mean to disrespect anyone, but it’s on their repo and it’s called “Ubuntu’s extension” in the Topicons Plus issue I linked to. Didn’t now it was that old, though. Was it only used for Gnome 3, or does Unity support Gnome extensions too?

Only for GNOME 3, Unity doesn't support GNOME extensions.
