Doesn't tools/openambit2gpx.py address your need? @svenstorp merged this in 5b82b61 upon request in #50.

Yes and no (I was the original author of the issue). I would like to have it built in, but it is no rush, that will be implemented when we get the plugin framework in place (issue #25). #50 will serve as a great base then!
